Stopping Smoking
Furnish me with tips to cope.

I've gone from 20 a day to fuck all (since the 1st) and I'm feeling a tiny bit murdery.

2 1/2 years done with it. the best advice I can give is to keep trying. It took me about 6 or 7 tries (in earnest) to get here. I still find times ready to murder for a cigarette but they pass more quickly.

Depending how long you've been smoking, the hardest part is overcoming the dopamine deficit that quitting creates. At 20 a day, nicotine was causing your receptors to produce copious amounts of dopamine. Now that you don't have nicotine, your dopamine levels will be significantly lower. It's heavily connected to the reward center in your brain, so if motivation is lacking right now, that may be why. Bupropion (Wellbutrin) can help, but you need a prescription.

Good luck.

I gave up six years ago after a good ten years of occasional trying.

I very quickly realised identifying the trigger points and dealing with the dopey cunts are two separate things.

It became easier once my sense of smell had returned - I could smell the house, the "clean" clothes in cupboards. Everything reeked of cigarette smoke. Disgusting.

Cheers for all the ideas and the support.

First day back in the office today and I've already threatened to cut the sales director and several other members of staff.

To be fair I did send them all an email at the end of last year warning them that this would probably happen.

Re: Stopping Smoking
I actually gave up when I had a Newsagent/Tobacconist I had smoked since a lad and had been on 40 a day for years then at age 40 my doctor said that If I gave up my lungs had a good chance of returning to normal.
I haven't smoked for 24 years.
After going 80 days last year off the booze I've certainly made up for it !!!
Time to cut down.

There's always something eh !

Re: Stopping Smoking
Agent, I had a hard time giving up the first time, but second time round was easier, so don't give up if your willpower fails you.

At some point I just lost the taste for it, so even when I did give in to the cravings, I'd have half a smoke, think it tasted awful and throw the packet away.

The more you're off it, the longer your body at tunes itself to a life without cigs. So if you fall off the horse, jump back on again.

Re: Stopping Smoking
Fuck me, how can people be smoking 60 a day?

I smoke less than 10 a day and that sometimes feels like I'm always smoking.

Re: Stopping Smoking
I gave up a few years ago for about a year, I found it surprisingly easy to stop but also very easy to start again, if that makes sense?

I'm going to give it another go and will be starting Friday.

Re: Stopping Smoking
Chucked the habit 3 years ago and still put the money I used to spend on cigs (40 a day) in the bank each fortnight, we went back to England this year using banked ex cig money, (we live in NZ)

Re: Stopping Smoking
60 a day is fuckin mental.
Even when I'm bang on a session...I wouldn't smoke that much.
When I'm drinking/assorted others..maybe 40.
Average about 15 a day otherwise

Agent

You should try reading the Alan Carr stop smoking book my brother who smokes 60 a day read it and was off of cigerettes for over 3 months it awoke something in his brain.
Alas it did not last but he has other issues too that make him smoke like an idiot.

Re: Stopping Smoking
Just keep going mate well done.
I have a terrible smoker in my brother and he has been in and out of hospital several times last year because of clogging in his lungs and pnemonia which may lead to worse things to come (God forbid) but he cannot give it up.
You can do it scud , 20 a day gives you a chance as my brother smokes 60, and i can tell you this it gets easier after a week or so and that many in my family have kicked the habbit without much difficulty several infact .
One bit of advice is not to allow stress or anger to determine your life.
You already know mate but just think of the extra money you can spend too.

Re: Stopping Smoking
Lady: Do you smoke?
Man: Yes
Lady: How many packs a day?
Man: 3 packs
Lady: How much per pack
Man: £10.00
Lady: And how long have you been smoking?
Man: 15 years
Lady: So 1 pack cost £10.00 and you have 3 packs a day which puts your spending each month at £900. In one year, it would be £10,800 correct?
Man: Correct
Lady: If in 1 year you spend £10,800 not accounting for inflation, the past 15 years puts your spending at £162,000 correct?
Man: Correct
Lady: Do you know that if you hadn't smoked, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accountingfor compound interest for the past 15 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?
Man: Do you smoke?
Lady: No
Man: Where's your freaking Ferrari then?

Re: Stopping Smoking
I really agree with the idea of rewarding yourself. Consider a man who smokes 20 a day. That's about 7.50 at todays prices. A months worth of 7.50 is £225.

Now, you can get a decent brass for £150 max. So swapping your fag habit for a brass habit gives you.....

....at least 30 brassing sessions a year!

Re: Stopping Smoking
Just smoke weed instead. Have a pipe and some buds handy and in your car at all times.

Its 2015 everyone is smoking weed these days.

Lucky I have never gotten seriously hooked to cigarettes but I huffed down 2 packs a few days ago since I had 30 hours of driving to do in a span of a couple days and even today I have fancied buying another 20.

Have just smoked herb though. Am smoking through 20 dollars a day of dispensary buds they still get your money here in Colorado even with the locals discount.

The best way to give up smoking is to get a carton of cigarettes and not leave your room until you've finished them
